MAJER
The estate stables in Stupava from the XVI. century were part of the extensive farming estate of the Pálffy noble family. The current owners found the building in a desolate condition and decided to renovate it. The effort of the author of the renovation- architect Ivan Jarina - was to highlight the scale and value of the period architecture as much as possible with minimal construction interventions. Even though the house is not a listed building, the studio VAN JARINA approached the renovation in a conservative way. The concept itself counted on the functional preservation of the precious original vaulted spaces. It was agreed that it is most adequate to use the magnificent space of the former stable as a large social hall for about 120 guests. Compared to the original form, a new entrance portal was added as well as skylights for the hotel´s conference room on the first floor. Apart from the hall, there is a lobby area, a cafe and accommodation in 16 rooms. Throughout the building, the architects tried to use the original materials as much as possible. A fence was created from dismantled bricks in combination with old wooden beams. All the remaining original niches, window openings and interesting artefacts were incorporated into the interior design. On the first floor, the structure of the original Renaissance vaults can be seen through the glass floor. Travertine stone paving was used for flooring. In some places, the original brick constructions of vaults and walls is showcased. All other areas remain white, white was used also for a wooden relief cladding, which forms the main decorative element of the entrance area, lobby and toilets. Old chandeliers were found and reconstructed in the main hall, transforming the old horse stable into a ballroom floor. A small step at the back of the hall reminds of the historical use, formerly used to mount a horse.
The most important task was the restoration of the Renaissance stone columns and vaults, which were saved and will fulfill their static and aesthetic function for centuries to come.
Thanks to the joint efforts of the owners, designers and implementers, it was possible to adapt the old Majer horse stable into a luxury hotel with a stylish restaurant.
